Uranopraphy & Night-Sky Photography

The "story of the heavens". How Greek Mythology explains the night sky.

  • Learn the myths behind the stars

  • Polish your photography skills

  • Explore the Greek islands

  • Discover the sailing life

Did you know that the ancient Greeks were using myths to create a map of the heavens, difficult to forget? Once you hear these stories, you will understand why!
Learn how to spot the constellations of the Northern Hemisphere, and how to use Ursa Minor to navigate through the night. Spot Jupiter, and find out how the ancient Greeks have connected the planet with the god Zeus and listen to the naughty stories about him.
A trip around Corfu, Paxi, and Antipaxi, that combines Greek mythology, astrophotography, the art of sailing, and optional adventure -such as snorkelling, hiking, and bicycle tours.

Enjoy sailing between the islands, swimming in cherry-picked bays and get lost at Corfu’s beautiful narrow paths called “Kantounia” and visit Gaios, one of the most picturesque small ports.

When the sun goes down, the stars are up to tell us their stories and myths. Our passionate Astrographer Bill will guide you through every light in the dark sky, with stories to remember for ages.

The sun comes up, and the day is yours to decide how to enjoy it. Read your book on the hammock, snorkel at the crystal clear water, discover a cave while stand-up paddling or just absorb the sunbeams with a cocktail at hand.

In a region previously occupied by the Venetians, the food culture is present in every corner. Visit traditional taverns with corfiot dishes, such as sofrito and pastitsada, try the local wine and learn about the culinary history.

The concept

In three different sessions, at meticulously selected spots, away from light pollution, our passionate Astrographer Bill will share all the secrets of the night sky.
How Perseus, who saved Andromeda from the sea serpent, found a place next to her in the celestial shpere? Let’s find out!

A great capture needs the right timing. Every trip is taking place in the weeks around the new moon, which offers the required darkness, for magnificent photographs. Bill will guide you step by step.

Take a closer look at the planets and the sun of our universe, and learn how to set up together a camera and a telescope for magnificent photographs.

Ideally, bring along a camera with good sensors for low light and night sky photography. If you do not have one, or you would rather keep it home, Bill is generous enough to allow you to use his.

All uranography and night sky photography sessions are held in English.

Bill Metallinos

“When you look at the stars, you can literally see into the past; Not only the past of those distant spots of light, but also of those who wrote their stories following them. Let’s listen to them”

Yoga Instructor Image

Bill is born and raised in Corfu. His passion for astronomy started already in young age, when along with his grandfather, he was spending the summer nights under the stars together. Despite not having studied academic astronomy, his extensive knowledge of the universe earned him the nickname “The Professor”! He is constantly travelling around the world to capture the unique astronomical phenomena with his camera. Always fascinated by the Greek mythology, he loves telling stories of how each of the stars and constellation has found their spot and their names in the sky, according to the ancient Greeks.

North Ionian Islands

Corfu
It’s town with narrow cobblestone alleys, the so-called “kandounia”, beautiful shops, cosmopolitan bars and restaurants and a Venetian flair, makes Corfu one of the most romantic islands. As you leave Corfu Town, you’ll come across stunning seaside villages, tiny verdant islets, opulent Corfu resorts, and wild natural scenery.

Paxi
Paxi is especially well-known for its beaches! Paxi beaches feature a lovely exotic setting, with the famous blue caves and enticingly crystal clear waters that are perfect for swimming! Its main village, Gaios, has without a doubt one of the most picturesque ports you will ever see.

Antipaxi
The smallest of the Ionian Islands, with no permanent residents, it is particularly well-known for its unusual Caribbean-style beaches. Voutoumi beach is one of a kind in the whole Greece. It has excellent hiking trails as well as some of Greece’s best swimming and snorkelling.
